چکیده

The aim of this study is to determine the sensitivity of polyphenol green tea on mutans streptococci. Tea is a traditional drink that is beneficial to health. One of its benefits is its capability to prevent dental caries because it has active substance polyphenol. An extract of green tea non-fermented tea leaves of Camellia sinensis and its chromatographically isolated polyphenol compound was examined in vitro in order to inhibit the bacterial growth by determining the inhibition zone (agar diffusion method), minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). The microorganisms tested were local strains of mutans of Streptococcus mutans isolated from humans harboring species on Bangka Island, Indonesia, labeled as: S.mutans1, S.mutans2, S.mutans3, S.mutans4, S.mutans5 and S.mutans6. The statistical analysis was done by descriptive statistic. The research showed that green tea polyphenol was most effective against S.mutans1 (inhibition zone 2.00 mm, MIC 10/ml, MBC 10/ml); S.mutans2 (inhibition zone 1.85 mm, MIC 10/ml, MBC 10/ml); S.mutans3 (inhibition zone 3.47 mm, MIC 10/ml, MBC 10/ml); S.mutans4 (inhibition zone 1.925 mm, MIC10/ml, MBC 10/ml); S.mutans5 (inhibition zone 2.225 mm, MIC 10/ml, MBC 10/ml) and S.mutans6 (inhibition zone 1.80 mm, MIC 10-1/ml, MBC 10-1/ml).We concluded that green tea leaves polyphenol shows antimicrobial activity against local strains of mutans of Streptococcus mutans, isolated from humans harbouring species, in vitro.
